THE MISSION OF THE PRESBYTERY OF MISSISSIPPI

Presbyterians see themselves as a people in mission. Each governing body must determine what its mission shall be in its own unique context, and it has considerable discretion in how it shall be organized for mission. It is the mission of the Presbytery of Mississippi to carry out effectively the following tasks:

1. Provide for the effective management of its life and work in its ecclesiastical and program responsibilities. This will involve planning, guiding, and evaluating the work of both the Ecclesiastical Committees and Program Committees of Presbytery under the leadership of the Presbytery, the Council, and Presbytery staff and officers.

2. Engage in congregational development through strengthening and resourcing the local congregations and assisting them to develop their local programs and ministries to their mission goals, their resources, and their potential.

3. Develop new churches and assist all the churches of Presbytery to reach new members through programs of evangelism and outreach which call people to faith in Christ and commitment to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

4. Nurture the membership of the churches of Presbytery through programs which offer education and fellowship. These programs will work to equip leaders of churches and their members to become more effective in working within their individual churches.

5. Care for the ministers of Presbytery by providing for their nurture and professional development. Emphasis will be given to creating a climate in which ministers can grow, use their gifts and share in the work of Presbytery.

6. Conduct programs of mission to human needs within the bounds of Presbytery and support mission efforts beyond the bounds through financial support, leadership involvement and project implementation.

7. Make adequate resources available to the local churches and their members to assist them in the ministries within their churches. These resources will include both personnel and printed materials and will be accompanied with the necessary leadership to make the resources effective within the work of the churches.
